Short on Work

“Global short -video contest on contemporary work” is an international competition focused on contemporary work developed by the Marco Biagi Foundation within the Phd Course in Work, Research & Innovation of the Marco Biagi University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

 

The aim of the course is to promote and collect audiovisual works that focus on the contemporary labour market, in order to create an international audiovisual archive to be used for teaching and research purposes. According to the interdisciplinary approach adopted, the works focus on the labour market and depict in a very peculiar way the important transformations that have occurred in the field in the last decades, outstripping the traditional dichotomy between industrial cinema & social documentary. “Short on Work” gives preference to short videos that – by their nature – represent a new visual approach according to which the audiovisual work is a means of reflection & research and not only a documentary tool.

Jury

Carlo Felice Casula is a Professor Emeritus of Contemporary History, History of Work & Social History at  “Roma Tre” University in Rome. He’s a member of the Scientific Council of several magazines and publishing houses and he’s also the editor of the series Insegnare il Novecento for Ancia Publishing House. During his career he analyzed the political, social and religious history of the XVII and XVIII centuries as well as the relationships between history and cinema. Casula also cooperated to the realization of many documentaries and worked as historical consultant for many fictional films. He contributed to the “Unesco History Project” and to the “ILO Century Project” with his essays written in English and in Italian, focused on the history of both these international Institutions.

 

Nicola Dusi is an Associate Professor of Intermedial Languages and Critical Analysis of Cinema & Television at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Department of Communication & Economics). He is specialized in the Theory and Analysis of cinema, TV series, digital media and in the relationships between art and media. Among his publications there are: Il cinema come traduzione. Da un medium all’altro: letteratura, cinema e pittura (UTET, 2003);  Dal cinema ai media digitali. Logiche del sensibile tra corpi, oggetti, passioni (Mimesis, 2014);  Contromisure. Trasposizioni e intermedialità (Mimesis, 2015). He works as editor for Segnocinema,  E/C, Oculaand writes for Doppiozero. He took part in the creation of the monographic issues of several international magazines, focused on intersemiotic translation, cinema adaptation (Iris, 2004); urban performances (E/C, 2008) and on dance as an inter-mediatic art (Degrés, 2010). Some of his most recent volumes are: L’uomo che vende un occhio, a subject for the movie Il Boomdirected by Vittorio De Sica (with L. Di Francesco, 2017); Bellissima tra scrittura e metacinema (with L. Di Francesco, 2017). Confini di genere. Sociosemiotica delle serie tv (2019); David Lynch. Mondi intermediali (with C. Bianchi, 2019).

 

Tommaso Fabbri is a Full Professor of Business Organization at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, as well as Assistant Director for E4E Graduate School  (Engineering for Economics – Economics for Engineering). He’s also a member of the Scientific Council of Marco Biagi Foundation and a faculty member of the Master’s Degree Course in Organizations & Human Resource Management at Bologna Business School. Bernard Ganne is specialized in Industrial Sociology and Sociology of Industrial Activities. He’s been analyzing for 30 years the changes that have occurred in local industrial companies and systems, especially in Europe and Asia. He wrote many books and articles and is a renowned specialist in the development of industrial clusters. Together with his research team, Ganne is famous for his peculiar approach that considers cinema and movies as effective research tools. He collaborated with Jean Paul Pénard during the creation of over 20 documentaries and coming-of-age movies, focused on the development of various companies and on the transformations that have occurred in the organisation of the workflow. Some of his works include video shootings of laboratories and companies, which present these environments from a socio-anthropological point of view. Many of his movies have been awarded during some important Science Film Festivals.

 

Vittorio Iervese is an Associate Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communicative Processes at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Department of Linguistic & Cultural Studies). He’s the Artistic Director of “Festival dei Popoli” (Italian Institute for Social Documentaries) and of the Laboratory of Analysis for Audiovisual Materials, as well as a member of the board of the Centre for Digital Humanities. During his studies, he focused on visual culture, visual sociology, the management of conflicts and intercultural communication processes, as well on the forms of social participation, children sociology and cultural planning. He recently completed an international research on the use of the images, aimed at creating a shared memory with children and teenagers (SHARMED. Shared Memory and Dialogue) and is currently taking part in a European research project focused on the integration of migrant children in the schools, called Child-UP.

 

Angelo Salento is an Associate Professor of Economic Sociology and Sociology of Work at the University of Salento. His research works focused on the regulation of the labour economy, on the “financialization” of the economy, on local and rural development and on Basic Economy. In 2014 and 2019 he worked as Research Fellow at the Manchester University. He’s currently focusing on the Basic Economy of urban and rural environments. His latest book (written side by side with the Collective for Basic Economy) is called “Foundational Economy. The Infrastructure of Everyday Life”,  Manchester University press 2018 (Italian issue edited by Einaudi 2019).

 

Elena Testa is the Managing Director of the “Cinema Impresa” National Archive (Foundation of the Experimental Centre of Cinematography), and deals with the management of the collections and with the enhancement of the works stored. She wrote many screenplays for documentaries (“Cinefiat Presenta” – Route 1, 2012), she directed various short films and organized educational workshops, as well as film festivals.
