The new multifaceted scenario of personal data protection in health research: the need for a trade-off between privacy and public interest
Digitalization, as a pillar of the economic and scientific development, has potentiated the chances to collect and share personal data, thus feeding the demand for protection. The UE General Data Protection Regulation n. 2016/679 (GDPR)2 responds to the digital revolution and raises attention on the scientific research that uses (or re-uses) personal data. The project will evaluate the impact of GDPR on scientific research and the repercussions on the research potentialities, in comparison to other regulatory documents and in light of the public law. In view of a trade-off between privacy and public interest, gaps and controversies will be addressed and discussed from an interdisciplinary perspective to offer improvement proposals.
