Work: access and quality in a gender perspective

The aim of this research is to investigate the existence and magnitude of the Added Worker Effect (AWE) within Swiss households, that refers to a situation in which a household member responds to another member’s unemployment by increasing his/her own labour supply. Adjustments in labour supply can be used by families as a buffer against future labour income uncertainty, similar to a form of private insurance. Therefore, it is relevant to investigate the issue for public policy assessments that otherwise frequently ignore these dynamics. The study is significant for Switzerland, which is characterized by a high degree of labour market flexibility and has experienced significant social policy reforms that are likely to have modified the labour response of households over time. This research adopts a quantitative approach using existing national datasets. From a gender perspective, this study examines possible gender differences in a partner’s response as well as how childbearing and other gender indicators may affect it. On the basis of results, recommendations useful for policy makers are elaborated aimed at alleviating the poverty of families coping with unemployment.
